A method is described for use in an interactive text processing system in which the task and document are selected from the same menu. This allows the operator to view all choices before making a selection. The Document/Task Selection menu shown in the figure presents the operator with both a directory 10 from which to choose a document and a "Command Line" 11 from which to choose a task. The operator effectively has two cursors 13 and 14 each represented by reversed-videoed cells indicating the selection. By using the cursor "up and down " keys the operator selects the document from the displayed directory. By using the cursor "left and right" keys the operator selects a command. When both cursors are positioned on the items to be selected, the Enter key is pressed, which completes the selection process.
