This article deals with image processing, and in particular with apparatus for presenting to a computing unit a window of selected picture elements (pels) from a serial stream of pels. For some image processing applications, each pel and its neighbors, i.e., a 3 x 3 pel matrix, must be available simultaneously. Usually, all pels of a picture frame are furnished serially. Fig. 1 schematically shows a matrix of pels a0 ... g9 from a given picture, and indicates two neighborhood windows X1 and X2 which must be available for processing picture elements b1 and b2, respectively. A specific arrangement is suggested which allows serial shifting of pels but provides another 3 x 3 neighborhood window after each shift. A block diagram of this arrangement is shown in Fig. 2.
