As shown in Fig. 1, an array of CCD (charge-coupled device) sensors is provided perpendicularly to a coin movement direction for successively sensing the heights of the coin edges at the array position to calculate the radius of the coin from the sensed heights by a microprocessor and so on. Referring to Fig. 2, when any of the outer edges A1 and A2 are sensed, the coin radius Ro can be obtained as follows: (Image Omitted) As to a perforated coin in Fig. 3, the radius Ri of the perforation is as follows: (Image Omitted) The successive sense and calculation for a coin in the above manner enables the precise radius of the coin to be obtained for selection.
