In raster graphics displays and raster graphics printers, filling or painting the interior of predefined shapes is an extremely useful operation. A useful adjunct is the capability of "shielding" predefined shapes nested within other shapes from the filling operation. For separately defined shield and fill boundaries, the overall algorithm is as follows. Each scan line is assumed to proceed horizontally along an X coordinate, while successive scan lines are arranged vertically along a Y coordinate.
