This article describes a serial data channel analysis system for testing a wide range of characteristics which have a serial data channel, such as disk recording devices. The system includes flexibility in track architecture for characteristics such as the number of sectors per track, organization of data within those sectors, and data encoding algorithms, flexible control of the data channel including tester subsystems providing precise timing signals to control a data transfer operation, ease of adapting the tester to changes being tested, and subsystems which collect error data and measure performance of the unit's channel. While the system is described in terms of disk file work, the aspects and features apply to any other units having serial data channels.
