In data channels such as those used for magnetic tape recording where data is encoded and passed through a band-limited channel, it is usually desired to restore the original data to its initial state. Techniques used to do this require the use of frequency response shaping, signal detection and clock recovery. This disclosure describes a new method which enhances the restoration of the initial data stream. This invention addresses those systems in which the data is represented as the peaks of the channel signal, i.e., derivative channels. Fig. 1 illustrates the shape of the signal as it passes through the channel. A typical isolated pulse is shown in Fig. 2.
