A method is described to permit the operator of an interactive text or data processing system to specify a unique layout of a print wheel element and the associated keyboard so that the print element may be manufactured. There are two situations to be resolved. The first is that when all of the print characters that the operator desires are in the display font of the work station, a set of menus similar to Fig. 1 is presented to the operator to allow the choice of whatever print characters are available. Keyboard changes are allowed in these menus so that the characters can be keyboarded. The location of the characters on the keyboard is by the Graphic Character number, which also defines the locations on the printer element, that is, the pedal on the print wheel.
