Abstract

A vector force transducer uses magneto-resistors and a parallel beam spring design to achieve a high force sensing resolution. Because the magneto-resistors are under no direct physical strain, they provide a highly reliable means of force measurement. In this device, force sensing resolution becomes a function of both the sensitivity of the magneto-resistor displacement sensor and the mechanical design of the supporting structure. One possible configuration for such a spring structure is shown in Fig. 1. All forces to be sensed by the device would be transferred to the structure through a cylindrical member 7. Both the structure and a gripping pad 8 are shown. It can be seen that forces in the "Y" direction will provide a displacement of section "A" relative to section "B".
