A latching mechanism includes a rotatable cam having a slot to receive a latch pin to cause rotation of the cam about its center when there is relative movement between the pin and the cam due to one being mounted on a hinged element and the other being mounted on a fixed element. This enables latching of the hinged element to the fixed element by pushing and unlatching by pulling, or vice versa. A latch cam 1 is rotatably mounted by a pin 2 on a hinged element 3, which is connected by a hinge to a fixed element 4 for pivoting about an axis parallel to the plane of the drawing and extending in a vertical direction in the drawing.
