The multiple gaps of a magnetic read/write head are aligned to be perpendicular to fixed tape guides. Head 10, whose read and write gaps are aligned along lines 11 and 12, respectively, includes a circular-cylinder surface 13 which mates with a similar surface formed in plate 14. Plate 14 also mounts air-bearing plates 15 and 16 which operate to support a length of magnetic recording tape (not shown) as the tape moves forward in the direction shown by arrow 17. During this movement, the tape is side-guided by upstanding guides 18. When head 10 is properly skew-adjusted, its visible head-gap lines 11 and 12 should be perpendicular to guides 18. In order to adjust head 13, it is loosely mounted in member 14, and member 14 is placed on fixture plate 19.
