Abstract

The purpose of this drop-on-demand maintenance station is to maintain the ink/air/nozzle interface at a performance level commensurate with the level of print quality desired. The salient features of the station are 1) a wiper sponge, 2) a sealable cap with integral reservoir, and 3) actuators for the wiper sponge wheel and the cap. The principal components of the nozzle guard and maintenance station are the sealing guard assembly 10, the wiper sponge 11, the cantilever beam-loading element 12, the cleaning solution 13 in tank 14, and the actuator solenoid 15. There are three modes of operation for the nozzle guard and maintenance station: print mode, idle mode, and dormant mode. The print mode of operation is in effect while the printhead is printing. During this time the actuator solenoid 15 is de-energized.
