This invention relates to a method for operating a computing apparatus under control of an exit routine for providing to a target routine several logical source data occurrences from a single physical source occurrence or a single logical source occurrence from several physical source occurrences. The exit routine is given a scratchpad space in a persistent control block associated therewith. The exit routine may signal special handling of the data to another routine. The signaling with reference to special handling is accomplished by way of return codes. More particularly, the invention relates to an exit routine having the ability to preprocess specific occurrences of source data before the data is considered ready for extraction.
