A method is described which permits a number of different text processing programs to operate with a number of different ASCII printers which have different functional characteristics and different functional capabilities without requiring each text processing program to be familiar with the specific characteristics and capabilities of each printer. The method conceptually involves having the text processing programs interface with a generalized ASCII data stream that contains all the control information imbedded in the data stream and incorporating a buffer prescan routine which functions to tailor the imbedded control in the generalized data stream into printer specific commands or functions.
