Abstract

Optically nonlinear crystals are useful for the conversion of laser output at frequency 1 to frequency 21 (second harmonic generation (SHG)). A series of arylamine-N-glycosides has been prepared for optical second harmonic generation in which the carbohydrate functions as a chiral auxilliary to the electronically active polar section of the molecule. In the table below typical results with nitroaniline/carbohydrate adducts are presented. SHG efficiency was measured in powder form with a 1.0 m YAG laser source and is relative to urea as a standard (urea itself is as efficient as most inorganic doublers). (Image Omitted) The nitroaniline derivatives in the table show a typical range of efficiency which is a strong function of the specific crystal structure of each material.
