Abstract

The following is a new optical technique that is well suited for monitoring the dull side of magnetic tape. With a simple detection scheme, surface distortions between 1 mm and several 100 mm can be probed with excellent reproducibility and accuracy. The measurement can be performed in real time, on-line with a rate of up to 30 measurements per second using inexpensive, commercially available components. Measurements at full tape width (24" at the jumbo and 1/2" at the pancake level) at full production speed of several hundred feed/minute is feasible. The process is applicable for monitoring distortions in other types of tapes and other materials and products as well.
