A multipurpose robot tool is described including a gripper which can carry normal gripper jaws but which may be interchanged for vacuum tools. Gripper jaws or fingers or vacuum tools may be interchanged, and two of either may be picked simultaneously from a tool rack. Two mandrels are fitted to the gripper in place of conventional gripper jaws. Each mandrel has an expanding sleeve mechanism for holding a gripper jaw or vacuum tool in position on the gripper. Existing interchangeable tooling allows either vacuum tool changes or gripper jaw changes, but not both. This arrangement allows vacuum tools or gripper jaws to be exchanged at will with the added feature that two vacuum tools can be picked simultaneously from the tool rack, thus reducing the number of tool changes required.
