Using a combined moving iron/moving coil printer armature with a conventional stator provides high speed typical of the moving-iron actuator with the controllability typical of the moving-coil actuator. Two types of high-performance printer actuators, moving iron and moving coil, are common. The moving-iron actuator has low mass, large stroke, high efficiency and speed, but it is not controllable. The moving-coil actuator has excellent control, but it has relatively large mass. Iron segments embedded in the armature act as conductors of a moving, current-carrying coil resulting from the movement of the armature, providing both improved printer performance and a means of dynamic control.
