Abstract

Molded gears and pulleys are frequently used in small appliances for low torque applications. Because of cost considerations it may be desirable to manufacture the molded gears and pulleys with generous tolerances. Using the molded gears and pulleys of the present invention it is possible to increase the torque capacity and reduce the tolerances while maintaining relatively low cost. The figure shows a molded gear 1 of the present invention. The molded gear is comprised of three concentric sections. The inner section 2 press fits on a drive shaft, and may be made from a relatively inexpensive polymer. The intermediate section 4 is an extruded metal insert. The outer section 6 is designed to transfer the torque and may be made from a relatively inexpensive polymer.
