Abstract

A method is described to allow the operator of an IBM Personal Computer (PC) to print in the background mode and continue on with other foreground tasks in a single-process system, such as the IBM DisplayWrite2 text processing system. This requires that DOS background be made to look like an integral part of the DisplayWrite2 system. Several things need to be done to communicate properly with DOS. First, the DisplayWrite2 print code must tell DOS exactly where to load the DOS print code needed to add a document to the DOS queue. Secondly, since the DOS will not accept a path name on the file to be printed, and DisplayWrite2 will, the DOS default directory must be changed to the path name specified on the requested document.
