An arrangement is described for use with the Debug Facility (DF) described on page 167 which permits the contents of all the registers for a single stepped instruction to be saved in the Instruction Trace Buffer (ITB) of the DF, if the instruction satisfies trace options that are specified by the operator. A command is employed to define the trace activity to be performed by the DF while stepping through a program. The operator may trace all instructions, all application instructions, all instructions within a range, or perform no tracing at all. The operator may, also, request that a break should be generated which is placed in the ITB immediately before the next instruction is stepped. The operator may also stop stepping instructions when the ITB becomes full.
