An insertion tool for a magnetic head arm is described which has a surface that is referenced to the arm's outer surface so that attached fingers accurately position the magnetic heads and suspensions during installation of the arm. The insertion tool comprises a body portion 2 having a positioning part 3 with a shape complementary to a side area of the magnetic head-arm assembly 1. The tool also includes a series of fingers 5 which extend from the body portion and are operable to depress the suspension and heads 6. The insertion tool is held firmly against the arm by a spring-loaded plunger 7 and a suitable lock 8. The locking function can be achieved by any of several methods involving friction, collets, cams or tapers. The lock attaches to the arm through a hole or slot in the arm.
