In a gas plasma display, intensity levels for individual pixels (picture elements) can be controlled only by controlling illumination time duty factor. The more intensity levels required for adequate gray scale rendition, the longer the time period for duty factor modulation using prior-art methods. This can cause a visual perception of flicker. If a first set of brightness intensity levels is generated using a first frame and a different set of intensity levels for the same pixels is generated on a subsequent frame and the frames are then alternated at a predetermined repetition rate, the mixture of the corresponding intensity levels will be some intermediate value between the two frame intensity levels for each pixel in an image.
