Abstract

A chip-handling turret assembly moves different-sized chip holders into location. Up to five different chips or billets can be loaded into the chip-handling turret assembly, one at a time, at random. The probes 2 tighten against a quartz disc 3 which provides a seal for a vacuum and also allows focused infrared (IR) light energy from a light energy source 4 through the small square hole 5 at the bottom. The square hole increases in size as the chip size is increased, to allow a maximum of light energy to strike the chips' surface, while still providing a reasonable surface for holding the chip with a vacuum. There is only one working position for chip re-work on the machine. The probe platter 6 is at a 2Πangle to allow only one probe to touch a chip at a time.
