An improved E 13-B magnetic ink character recognition operation includes individual adjustments of recognition time zones and variable threshold settings for individual characters. A previous article [*] disclosed a magnetic ink character recognition system wherein the analog signal for a character is sampled, digitalized and compared to nominal character values. In the disclosed system an analog signal for a character is similarly sampled and digitalized. The stored digital sample signals are grouped into a member of time zones, and the peak values in the various zones are analyzed. In the following detailed discussion it is assumed, as an example only, that 80 digital samples and 7 zones are used for each character. The samples 1-5 and 75-80 are not used in the recognition operation.
