Abstract

This article describes an innovative high throughput (>10 mbps), minimum delay, fast setup/teardown (<250 ns) circuit switch which can simultaneously handle voice, video, and data, while providing the performance of both a packet switch and a circuit switch. Communication networks of the future will need to handle voice, video and data information. Fast routing of this information to the proper destinations will be vital to the smooth operation of the network. The primary physical mechanism for this routing is the switch. This switch provides both the necessary speed of operation and the flexibility required for a wide variety of information types for these communication networks. Information on a communication network flows from offices, communications facilities, and data processing facilities to wiring closets.
