A method is described for use with the document display system described in the preceding article which permits the operator of the system to skip through the document being displayed. An operator may want to skip back (and later ahead) in a document being read on a display device. The system is provided with one or more pairs of functional control keys to control this function. One pair of keys controls the direction of the skip; another controls its size, e.g., a sentence, paragraph, page, etc. The operator may press the skip function control keys to move forward or backward in the source document. This feature permits the operator to reread or skip over portions of the document.
