Microcode Protection Method

This article discloses a method of protecting the secrecy and integrity of proprietary microcode during shipment to a customer and thereafter while being down-line loaded by the customer from a controlling host to a remote terminal device. Secrecy and integrity of the microcode could be maintained by encrypting the microcode and also by providing a set of cryptographic check digits calculated on the microcode using the Data Encryption Algorithm (DEA) [*] and one of the modes of encryption described in the American National Standard for information systems - data encryption algorithm - modes of operation, American National Standards Institute (ANSI) X3.106-1983. However, national security considerations may restrict the promulgation of encryption techniques.
