In a vending machine an escrow station has a compound floor with a pivoted upper section which is lever-actuated by the customer access door to raise the vended item to a position for easy retrieval, or the floor slides, in its own plane, out of the escrow station, allowing the contents to drop into a reject bin. Fig. 1 shows escrow station 1 above and separated from reject bin 7 by sliding floor 2 on which is mounted issue tray 5. Tray 5 is pivoted at 11, is provided with lever arm 10, and is constructed with longitudinal bottom grooves which mate with the teeth of comb 6. The item(s) to be vended is brought into escrow station 1 along path 3 and deposited in tray 5. If it is determined that the item(s) is to be issued, the normally locked access door 8 is unlocked and the customer is signalled that the item(s) is available.
