A method is described which permits the operator of an IBM Personal Computer to employ the "find" function to locate hidden control codes in a document that has been created employing a Displaywriter-type text processing system. In the creation of a text document on a Personal Computer with a text processing program such as a Displaywriter, various formatting- type control codes are imbedded in the text. For example, a shell document is often employed where stop codes are inserted at locations where the operator wants to insert data that varies from one document to another. The operator can cause all control codes that are generally not displayed, to be displayed, and cursor to the symbol representing the stop code. Alternately, the "find" function may be employed.
