A multi-part journal feed mechanism that provides controlled paper tension, together with balanced frictional drag on inner and outer parts of the form, maintains printing registration and paper tracking without commonly used feed-roll flanges or paper edge guides. Frictional drag of the platen on the inner part of the form is balanced by frictional drag of a drag plate on the outer part of the form. The figure shows that the paper path is from the bottom of supply roll 1, over drag-plate 2, around platen 3, under and around drive roller 4, and between drive roller 4 and pinch roller 5. At this point the parts of the form are separated. The outer part 6 feeds up and out of the machine. The inner part 7 feeds to take-up roll 8.
