The present article describes an improved air knife for use in soldering surface-mounted components (SMCs). One improvement includes the placing of angled baffles within the exit orifice of a stationary air knife nozzle. Another improvement includes means for adjusting the position of the air knife nozzle so that the angle at which air is incident on the SMC work piece is changeable. The improvements provide optimum conditions which eliminate soldering defects, such as bridging between component leads. Fig. 1 shows a currently available commercial solder wave system. The wave system includes an air knife which provides an air sheet (between an angle of 45-60 degrees) relative to a conveyor transporting SMC cards.
