This article describes how to sense the removal or insertion of a read/ write diskette from a 5.25" diskette drive regardless of the I/O interface by using a standard "write protect" line to indicate "diskette change." While most of the I/O signals on the interface are common among drive manufacturers, a drive status line, "diskette change", is nonstandard. "Diskette change" indicates the removal or insertion of a diskette. Not all drives provide this status line. Also, the pin assignment for this status line can vary with the drive manufacturer. Thus, a file adapter that connects to drives with dissimilar interfaces may not be able to use the "diskette change" status line because it either is not provided by the particular drive manufacturer or appears on a different connector pin.
