Method for Determining Linear Print Hammer Control

A method is described for determining the proper driving pulse time to obtain a desired final velocity for a linear print hammer of an impact- type printer. The method quickly adjusts the driving pulse width to account for hammer to hammer variations. The figure plots the hammer velocity of the printer against time. In the figure, Vf is the final velocity of the hammer, Tpw is the pulse turn-off time, and Th is the time the hammer hits. The acceleration of the hammer is given by Equation I. I. Vf = acceleration = a Tpw The total distance travelled (d) by the hammer is known since it can be measured, and is given by Equation II.
