A method to allow the operator of an interactive text processing system to insert a variable amount of new text and merge it with the existing text within a window or screen is described. The method allows the operator to request a movable divider bar which is positioned at the current cursor location within existing text. The operator also specifies the "starting line" in the source text. The divider bar is movable by a "mouse", cursor control keys or similar arrangement. As the bar is moved, it appears to "push" the existing text in front of it, opening up new lines into which the source text specified by the starting line is copied. When moved back, the bar "deletes" newly inserted text lines. The operator can continuously vary the amount of text copied, moving the bar back and forth, until the desired effect is achieved.
