Stepper Motor Drive for a Printer Escapement System

A system is described to provide a stepper motor drive function which permits a stepper motor driven escapement system to be utilized in a high quality, high performance printer. The described system is employed in a printer which prints information using a form of thermal print technology. With this technology, characters are formed in a dot matrix pattern. Dots are placed on the paper while the carrier is moving across the paper at a constant speed. Printing is done in only one direction, from left to right. At the end of a print move, the carrier is returned to the left to start the next print move. The motor drive system which transports the carrier back and forth during print and return is referred to as the escapement system. The print technology used imposes a number of requirements on the system.
