A method is described which permits the operator of an interactive processing system to define the space before and after a row in a table, such as a spreadsheet. The method provides a row attribute as part of the program being executed, such as the spreadsheet program, which allows the operator to define space before and after a row. The measurement is in terms of inches or millimeters. The maximum amount of spacing the operator may specify is limited to the physical page size minus the top and bottom margin offsets of the page, the height of the row, and the space before and/or after the amount of the row attribute. The operator is able to format the table data in a more presentable form, without having to leave blank rows.
