A method is disclosed which permits the operator of an interactive system to optionally display the contents of annotated data. In text processing systems that allow dynamic, in-line creations of annotations in an existing document, a problem arises that the operator may not always want the annotation data to be hidden from view or always displayed. The new method provides a display attribute that belongs to the annotation data. If the display attribute is on, the annotation data is continuously displayed opaquely overlaying any data currently being displayed on the screen. If the display attribute is off, the annotation data is hidden from view by the data being displayed and only the annotation mark representing the annotation is displayed.
