A mechanism for locating the ribbon cartridge on a printer is described which provides accurate alignment between the ribbon and the printwheel, requires no adjustment for alignment, and does not interfere with the installation or removal of the cartridge. As shown in Fig. 1, the ribbon cartridge has a pivot center 1 located between the exposed ribbon 2 and the cartridge drive knob 3. This geometry allows the cartridge to be rotated to a visibility position when no printing is being done by using a cam profile in the drive knob which is utilized only when the drive gear 4 is reversed by the stepper motor drive.
