High Speed Recursive Digital Filter Realization

A technique is described whereby pipeline architecture may be applied to the implementation of any finite state machine. This method is applied to the implementation of infinite impulse response (IIR) digital filters, so as to improve the throughput rate of these digital filters as used in digital computers. Although pipeline techniques have been used successfully in obtaining greater processing speeds in digital computers, the application of these techniques has been limited to non-recursive filters. The use of pipelining to recursive filters is not well known. The concept presented herein shows how the use of this technique in implementing IIR digital filters can significantly increase the throughput rate. It is known that pipelining an IIR filter is difficult because of the feedback terms.
