A method is described to permit the operator of an interactive text processing system to customize footnote editing so that the editor either creates a skeleton only at the footnote text location or places the operator at the footnote text location to begin inputting the footnote text. In word processors providing footnotes, the operator is forced to create and input footnote text in one of two established ways: immediately upon insertion of the footnote mark or at some later time in the editing session. There is no way for the operator to customize footnote editing according to his personal preference. This method provides an operator-definable attribute to control the footnote editing option.
