A method is described which permits the operator of an interactive text processing system to selectively move/copy text attributes. In a traditional editor, moving or copying text data to a new location so that the text data optionally retains its display characteristics can be a frustrating and tedious process. For example, in the Displaywriter editor, if a paragraph is moved or copied and the left margin at the source location is 20, but the left margin at the destination location is 10, the left margin of the moved or copied paragraph will be 20 only if the operator remembers to move the control character that defines the left margin to be 20. A similar problem occurs when moving or copying text that is underlined or in a different font.
