A method is described to permit the operator of an interactive system to request automatic width adjustment of table cells as the data is entered so that all the entered data may be seen within cell boundaries. In some interactive system the operator is provided with a one- cell table function which may be used to create forms or form letters. The cell width, which is definable by the operator, does not vary when data is entered into the cell. If the data entered into the cell exceeds the cell boundaries, the data scrolls. This is useful if the operator does not want the cell size to change, but does not allow the operator to change the size during entering of data.
