A technique is described whereby an existing IBM Series/1 data processing unit may be field modified to increase the allowable memory capacity from a maximum of one megabyte of main storage to two megabytes. In particular, the existing Series/1 4956 processor card is replaced by a new Series/1 processor card to increase the memory capacity and also increases processing speed by up to 50 percent. Heretofore, a completely new IBM Series/1 unit was required to be purchased in order to obtain improved performance and to increase storage capacity. The existing circuitry was not designed to recognize the extra address bit that is required to increase the system storage capacity.
