A method is described which prevents an operator of an interactive processing system from viewing unresolved information in a cell of a spreadsheet if it is based on data in another cell that has not been completed. Further, if a cell contains a calculation which involves an undefined cell (a cell which has no calculation or data in it), then that calculation will be displayed within that unresolved cell (a cell whose calculation cannot be determined because of an undefined referenced cell), even if that cell is not selected. The system also reminds the operator about the incomplete table data. A record of those cells which are referenced by other cells is kept by the system. The operator selects a table icon and points to a "Show" command.
