This article describes a method for assembling custom power supplies using standardized modules, each module representing an optimized section in terms of size, shape and function, which can be connected to modules of other sections without further development. In the technique disclosed herein, a power supply design is broken down into basic parts of input, bridge (half bridge or full bridge), control, protection, EMC filter and secondary, as illustrated in the drawing. Each section (except the secondary which is unique to the particular power supply being developed) is analyzed and optimized. The sections are selected so as to be a self-contained functioning entity with a minimum number of connections to other sections. The components within each section are selected to be off the shelf, reliable, and low cost.
