This article describes a head load/unload mechanism for a magnetic disk file using a piezoelectric flexure arm. Fig. 1 shows a piezoelectric flexure arm 1 with a tang at one of its ends mounted to the file base 2, a head/arm assembly 3 with a mating tang and a disk 4. The lifting mechanism operates as shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 3. First, as shown in Fig. 2, flexure arm 1 is flexed by turning on the power and head/arm assembly 3 is moved to the lift zone so that the tang on head/arm assembly 3 engages the tang on flexure arm 1. Then, as shown in Fig. 3, the power is turned off and flexure arm 1 will lift head/arm assembly 3 from the surface of disk 4.
