The system design described in this article is an approach to providing an industry-standard personal computing capability on a workstation designed originally as a host terminal. The basis of the approach is a pair of cooperating processors. One of the processors is used to handle the base function of the workstation. This includes the host terminal keyboard-display function and the support of the peripheral devices attached to the workstation. The other processor is used to provide an industry-standard personal computing environment. By this means, both functions can be offered simultaneously in the same terminal with a minimum of compromise on the individual design points.
