This article describes a CRT screen illumination adjustment technique which utilizes three programmed screen patterns. The first pattern is for illumination of the contrast and brightness reference. The illumination of the second pattern is affected by contrast only, and the illumination of the third pattern is affected by brightness only. Conventional CRT screen illumination adjustment procedures set the contrast and brightness potentiometers to give a specific amount of illumination from the CRT. The relationship of the contrast to the brightness is not repeatable since the only measure is the ultimate CRT illumination. The technique disclosed herein uses three programmed screen patterns whose illumination is affected by contrast and brightness, contrast only and brightness only, respectively.
