Abstract

An attachment connecting a standard commercial screwdriver to an IBM 7535/7540-type robot is described using a pressure expandable mandrel to pick up a required screwdriver bit. The mandrel may also be used to pick up vacuum tools or grippers under program control. A screwdriver adapter housing fitted with optical sensing enables the screwdriver bit to be stopped in a known position. The inclusion of speed and torque transducers allows programmable screwdriver control. Fig. 1 illustrates an IBM 7535 robot 1 with a standard commercial screwdriver motor-gearbox unit 2 mounted concentrically via a special adapter 3 on top of robot Z shaft 4 concentric with the Z axis.
