Existing filtering algorithms do not record the full extent of tablet pen movement at corners and cusps. The described algorithm improves the writing shape representations particularly at corners and cusps. Electronic tablets are used to record images of handwritten symbols, cursive writing and drawings by recording periodically the time sequence of coordinate points. In working such tablets one is generally concerned with capturing the shape of the writing or drawing and not with the precise time correspondence of the coordinate points. This being the case, it is generally appropriate to reduce the original points in a manner so as to retain only the desired properties of the images. This process is called filtering.
